October brings haunted houses, scary movies, and playful jump scares—the kind of fear we choose because it’s fun. We laugh when the lights come on, knowing the monsters weren’t real.

But for millions of people living with anxiety, fear doesn’t wait for Halloween. It shows up in everyday life, often when it’s least expected. And unlike the safe thrills of the spooky season, anxiety can feel overwhelming and impossible to escape.

The good news? Anxiety can be managed, and with the right tools and support, life can feel calmer and more balanced.

Fun Fear vs. Everyday Anxiety

There’s an important difference between seasonal frights and daily struggles with anxiety.

  • Fun Fear: Rollercoasters, haunted houses, and horror movies. You know it isn’t real, your body gets a quick adrenaline rush, and the fear fades.
  • Anxiety Fear: Persistent worry or dread that lingers even when there’s no immediate danger. It may cause racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, or physical tension that doesn’t resolve on its own.

“Anxiety activates the same fight-or-flight response in the body as a haunted house does—but the difference is, with anxiety, the body doesn’t get the ‘all clear’ signal,” explains Dr. Jason Miller, Chief Clinical Officer and managing partner at Athra. “That’s why patients often describe it as exhausting. Their system feels stuck in overdrive.”

Why Anxiety Can Feel So Overwhelming

Anxiety is more than just “worrying too much.” It’s a medical condition that can affect both the body and the mind. Symptoms may include:

  • Constant overthinking or restlessness
  • A racing heart or shortness of breath
  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
  • Irritability or feeling on edge

Over time, untreated anxiety can interfere with work, relationships, and overall health—making it important to recognize the signs early.

“Anxiety left untreated can compound into depression or other health problems,” says Andrew Hardin, CEO and managing partner of Athra. “That’s why we encourage patients to reach out sooner rather than later. You don’t need to wait until it feels unmanageable.”

Everyday Strategies to Manage Anxiety

While professional support is often key, there are small, practical steps that can help calm anxiety in daily life:

  • Ground Yourself: Use the “5-4-3-2-1” technique—name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.
  • Breathe Through It: Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six. Repeat several times to signal your body to relax.
  • Reframe Negative Thoughts: When your mind says, “What if everything goes wrong?” counter it with, “What if things go right?”
  • Limit Overexposure: Too much scrolling through social media or constant news updates can increase anxiety. Setting boundaries can help reduce triggers.

When It’s More Than a Scare

It’s normal to feel anxious sometimes. But if fear is interfering with your ability to function or enjoy life, it may be time to seek additional support.

“Reaching out doesn’t mean you’re weak—it means you’re ready to get better,” shares Raul Rivas, Athra’s Outpatient Office Manager. “We work with patients every day who tell us they wish they had started sooner. The relief of having someone walk alongside you is real.”

At Crosstown Mental Health, powered by Athra, our outpatient providers are dedicated to supporting patients through therapy, medication management, and compassionate care tailored to individual needs.
