Originating in ancient India, yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and ethical principles to promote overall well-being. Let’s explore the impact of yoga on mental health and how it can contribute to a healthier mind.

Stress Reduction and Relaxation

One of the most well-known benefits of yoga is its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. The combination of controlled breathing, gentle movements, and mindfulness helps calm the nervous system and lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Regular practice of yoga has been shown to improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Improved Emotional Regulation

Yoga encourages self-awareness and mindfulness, which can improve emotional regulation. By tuning into the body and breath, practitioners learn to observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can lead to greater emotional resilience and the ability to respond to stressors in a more balanced way.

Enhanced Mind-Body Connection

Yoga emphasizes the connection between the mind and body, encouraging practitioners to be present in the moment. This heightened awareness can improve body image, self-esteem, and overall mental well-being. By cultivating a positive relationship with the body, individuals may experience greater mental clarity and emotional stability.

Better Sleep Quality

Many people struggle with sleep disturbances, which can have a significant impact on mental health. Yoga has been shown to improve sleep quality by reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and calming the mind. A regular yoga practice can help individuals fall asleep faster and enjoy more restful sleep.

Community and Support

Yoga classes often provide a sense of community and support, which can be beneficial for mental health. Practicing yoga with others can create a sense of belonging and connection, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. The supportive environment of a yoga class can also be a source of encouragement and motivation.

Conclusion

Yoga offers a holistic approach to mental health, addressing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. By incorporating yoga into their routine, individuals can experience reduced stress, improved emotional well-being, better sleep, and a greater sense of community. As more research is conducted on the benefits of yoga, it is becoming increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for enhancing mental health and overall quality of life.

October brings haunted houses, scary movies, and playful jump scares—the kind of fear we choose because it’s fun. We laugh when the lights come on, knowing the monsters weren’t real.

October brings haunted houses, scary movies, and playful jump scares—the kind of fear we choose because it’s fun. We laugh when the lights come on, knowing the monsters weren’t real.

But for millions of people living with anxiety, fear doesn’t wait for Halloween. It shows up in everyday life, often when it’s least expected. And unlike the safe thrills of the spooky season, anxiety can feel overwhelming and impossible to escape.

The good news? Anxiety can be managed, and with the right tools and support, life can feel calmer and more balanced.

Fun Fear vs. Everyday Anxiety

There’s an important difference between seasonal frights and daily struggles with anxiety.

Fun Fear: Rollercoasters, haunted houses, and horror movies. You know it isn’t real, your body gets a quick adrenaline rush, and the fear fades.

Anxiety Fear: Persistent worry or dread that lingers even when there’s no immediate danger. It may cause racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, or physical tension that doesn’t resolve on its own.

“Anxiety activates the same fight-or-flight response in the body as a haunted house does—but the difference is, with anxiety, the body doesn’t get the ‘all clear’ signal,” explains Dr. Jason Miller, Chief Clinical Officer and managing partner at Athra. “That’s why patients often describe it as exhausting. Their system feels stuck in overdrive.”

Why Anxiety Can Feel So Overwhelming

Anxiety is more than just “worrying too much.” It’s a medical condition that can affect both the body and the mind. Symptoms may include:

Constant overthinking or restlessness

A racing heart or shortness of breath

Difficulty concentrating or sleeping

Irritability or feeling on edge

Over time, untreated anxiety can interfere with work, relationships, and overall health—making it important to recognize the signs early.

“Anxiety left untreated can compound into depression or other health problems,” says Andrew Hardin, CEO and managing partner of Athra. “That’s why we encourage patients to reach out sooner rather than later. You don’t need to wait until it feels unmanageable.”

Everyday Strategies to Manage Anxiety

While professional support is often key, there are small, practical steps that can help calm anxiety in daily life:

Ground Yourself: Use the “5-4-3-2-1” technique—name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.

Breathe Through It: Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six. Repeat several times to signal your body to relax.

Reframe Negative Thoughts: When your mind says, “What if everything goes wrong?” counter it with, “What if things go right?”

Limit Overexposure: Too much scrolling through social media or constant news updates can increase anxiety. Setting boundaries can help reduce triggers.

When It’s More Than a Scare

It’s normal to feel anxious sometimes. But if fear is interfering with your ability to function or enjoy life, it may be time to seek additional support.

“Reaching out doesn’t mean you’re weak—it means you’re ready to get better,” shares Raul Rivas, Athra’s Outpatient Office Manager. “We work with patients every day who tell us they wish they had started sooner. The relief of having someone walk alongside you is real.”

At Crosstown Mental Health, powered by Athra, our outpatient providers are dedicated to supporting patients through therapy, medication management, and compassionate care tailored to individual needs.

Taking the Next Step

This October, as you enjoy the fun scares of the season, remember that real anxiety doesn’t have to haunt your daily life. With support, calm is possible.

If you’ve been struggling with anxiety, we’re here to help. Contact Crosstown Mental Health today to schedule an appointment and begin your journey toward healing.

September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to celebrate the joys of growing older and to focus on the steps that help us feel our best. At Athra Healthcare, we believe that true healthy aging means caring for both your body and your mind.

Why Mental Health Matters as We Age

Many people keep up with medical visits, exercise, and healthy eating. Yet mental health is just as important for staying strong and independent.

Did you know:

Nearly 1 in 5 adults over 55 experiences a mental health concern such as depression or anxiety.

Untreated depression can increase the risk of serious health problems like heart disease.

Social isolation can raise the risk of dementia by 50% and early death by 29%.

Dr. Jason Miller, Athra’s Managing Partner and Chief Clinical Officer, shares, “Healthy aging is not just about living longer, it is about living well. Protecting your mental health, finding purpose, and staying connected are just as important as any medical checkup.”

Tips for Healthy Aging and Mental Wellness

✔ Stay Connected

Spend time with friends, family, or community groups. Simple check-ins and shared activities can ease loneliness and lift your mood.

✔ Keep Moving

Walking, stretching, or light exercise helps your body stay strong and boosts your mood and memory.

✔ Sleep Well

Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Restful sleep helps you feel more energetic and focused.

✔ Exercise Your Mind

Read, do puzzles, or learn something new. Keeping your brain active supports memory and problem-solving.

✔ Reach Out for Help

If you are feeling sad, hopeless, or withdrawn, do not brush it off as “just part of aging.” Support and treatment are available, and they really do help.

Simple Tricks for Staying Motivated

Listen to music or an audiobook while you walk.

Take medications at the same time as a daily routine, like breakfast.

Make changes with a friend or loved one so you can support each other.

How Athra Can Help

Athra works alongside senior living communities, rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, ERs, and substance use facilities to provide care and support. Whether it is urgent psychiatric care, crisis intervention, or ongoing therapy, we understand the unique needs of older adults and their families.

Dr. Miller explains, “No one should have to face the challenges of aging alone. Our goal is to surround people with the right care, compassion, and resources so they can live with dignity and peace of mind.”

Take the First Step

As the school year begins, the energy in the air is a mix of excitement, fresh starts, and—if we’re being honest—a bit of stress. For students, new classes and friends can be thrilling. But for parents and teachers, the shift into the school season often comes with heavier workloads, tighter schedules, and the challenge of supporting young people through their own transitions.

At Athra, we work exclusively with adults in our outpatient services, and we see first-hand how the demands of the school year can impact mental health. Supporting the well-being of parents and teachers isn’t just important—it’s essential for creating the supportive environments students need to thrive.

Why the Back-to-School Season Can Be Stressful for Adults

Even if you love the start of the school year, it can quickly become overwhelming:

For parents: juggling homework help, carpool schedules, after-school activities, and work responsibilities can leave little time for personal care.

For teachers: balancing lesson planning, grading, and administrative demands—while also being a steady presence for students—can be emotionally and physically draining.

The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that nearly 60% of teachers feel stressed “often” or “always” during the school year, and 38% of parents say the back-to-school transition is one of the most stressful times of the year for their families.

Dr. Jason Miller, Athra’s chief clinical officer ad managing partner notes, “When adults are stretched too thin, it not only impacts their own well-being but also their ability to be fully present for the young people in their lives.”

Mental Health Tips for Parents and Teachers

1. Keep a Consistent Routine

A predictable schedule helps reduce anxiety and improves sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults get 7–9 hours of sleep per night for optimal mental and physical health. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day—even on weekends—can stabilize mood and increase energy.

2. Protect Personal Time

Set aside at least 15–30 minutes daily for something that restores you—reading, walking, meditating, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee. “Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s how you sustain the energy to care for others,” says Dr. Miller. Research published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology shows that even short breaks can reduce stress and prevent burnout.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

Both at work and home, perfection is unrealistic. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) emphasizes that prioritizing and breaking large tasks into smaller steps can prevent overwhelm and help maintain balance.

4. Monitor Your Stress Signals

Pay attention to changes in mood, sleep patterns, or physical health. Headaches, irritability, and fatigue can be early signs of burnout. A study in Frontiers in Psychology found that identifying stress symptoms early can lead to better coping strategies and improved resilience.

5. Stay Connected

Social connection is a proven protective factor for mental health. The Mayo Clinic notes that having a strong social support network can increase happiness, improve self-confidence, and even extend life expectancy. Make time to connect with friends, colleagues, or other parents—even if it’s just a quick coffee or phone call.

6. Ask for Help Early

If stress, anxiety, or burnout becomes overwhelming, seek professional support before it escalates. The APA stresses that early intervention leads to better outcomes for most mental health conditions. Athra offers outpatient mental health services tailored to the unique needs of adults, including teachers and parents.

How Athra Can Help

We provide compassionate, professional care for adults navigating life transitions, workplace pressures, and personal challenges. With both in-person and virtual outpatient visits, getting support fits easily into your schedule.

📍 San Antonio Corporate Office:

909 NE Interstate 410 Loop, Suite 600, San Antonio, TX 78209

📞 (210) 460-0070

🌐 AthraHealthcare.com

The bottom line: Taking care of your own mental health is one of the best ways to support the children and young people who depend on you. As Dr. Miller puts it, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. When adults are mentally healthy, everyone in their care benefits.”

Odessa, Florida — July 2025 — Athra, a national leader in behavioral health and substance use treatment, is proud to announce its newest partnership with Starkey Ranch ER & Hospital, a state-of-the-art Nutex Health, Inc. facility. Through this collaboration, Athra has launched a fully integrated behavioral health and substance use program, now available 24/7 within the hospital’s emergency and inpatient settings.

With this partnership, Starkey Ranch ER & Hospital now offers medical detox services, urgent psychiatric support, ketamine treatment, medication management, and comprehensive behavioral health consultations—complementing the hospital’s already robust medical care capabilities.

“This partnership allows us to address both the physical and behavioral health needs of patients at the same time, under one roof,” said Dr. Jason Miller, Chief Clinical Officer and Managing Partner at Athra. “From acute psychiatric symptoms to substance withdrawal, our team is here to respond quickly and compassionately.”

Athra’s provider team—including board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed mental health clinicians—works alongside the hospital’s medical staff to ensure real-time evaluation, crisis stabilization, and medication oversight for patients in need of behavioral health or substance use support.

“At Starkey Ranch ER & Hospital, patients now have immediate access to dual-diagnosis care,” said Tera Rudloff, Vice President of Operations at Athra. “Whether someone presents with overdose symptoms, panic attacks, or is seeking medication-assisted detox, there’s no delay and no need for transfer. We bring the support directly into the ER and hospital setting.”

This integrated model not only benefits walk-in patients but also supports first responders, primary care offices, schools, psychiatrist and therapy offices, and addiction treatment providers seeking reliable and timely psychiatric and substance use care options for those they serve.

“Our role is to complement the exceptional care already being provided by the Starkey Ranch ER & Hospital medical team,” added Andrew Hardin, CEO and Managing Partner of Athra. “We make behavioral health more accessible, reduce hospital burden, and improve outcomes by ensuring timely interventions.”

This initiative marks another step in Athra’s growing footprint across Florida and the nation—extending critical behavioral health services to communities in need through strong local partnerships.
